Custom Gears & ShaftsTechnical guide and applications

Operating principles and characteristics

Custom gears and shafts can combine teeth, bearing seats, keyways or splines to suit a drawing. Rack-and-pinion sets convert rotation into linear motion; internal gears support compact layouts such as planetary systems. Each component needs functional dimensions and machining datums, not just an outline or tooth count.

Applications and operating conditions

Custom gears and shafts serve machine tools, packaging, feeding, conveying, printing and dedicated reducers. Rack-and-pinion sets provide linear feed, travel or height adjustment; internal gears often form planetary ring gears; geared shafts integrate teeth with bearing seats. Select the component for its mechanism and define load, fits, tolerances, heat treatment and inspection datums. Industry labels alone do not establish accuracy or life.

Selection and drawing checklist

Provide revision-controlled 2D drawings, necessary 3D models, material, heat treatment, hardness and inspection datums. Identify critical fits, runout and coaxiality. Specify both the standard and accuracy grade to establish measurable acceptance criteria.

Technical question

Is a 3D model alone enough for quotation and production?

A model explains shape but may omit tolerances, tooth parameters, heat treatment and acceptance requirements. Supply an annotated drawing or specification and resolve missing details before production.
