Hypoid & Zerol Bevel GearTechnical guide and applications

Operating principles and characteristics

Hypoid gears have non-intersecting axes with an offset, allowing alternative packaging of the drive. Zerol bevel gears use intersecting axes and a mean spiral angle of 0°, while retaining curved tooth traces. They are distinct gear types and are not directly interchangeable.

Applications and operating conditions

Hypoid gears are commonly used in vehicle final drives and offset-axis reducers. Industrial conveyors and material-handling equipment can also use offset layouts to position motors and output shafts. Zerol gears serve intersecting-axis angle drives, including industrial sewing and tool mechanisms, and are not direct hypoid replacements. Check shaft geometry, offset, ratio, sliding losses, heat, lubrication and duty-dependent life.

Selection and drawing checklist

For hypoid gears, specify offset magnitude and direction, tooth ratio, mounting distances and lubrication. Tooth sliding affects losses and heat generation. For Zerol gears, define tooth geometry, backlash and pairing requirements. Use a rating method appropriate to the gear type.

Technical question

Is a Zerol gear the same as a straight bevel gear?

No. Zero refers to the mean spiral angle, not a straight tooth trace. Compare tooth geometry, mating gears and installation dimensions before considering a replacement.
