A gearbox is a structural system
Gears redirect motion and transmit torque, but shafts, bearings and the housing maintain their relative positions. Lubrication separates contacting surfaces; seals control leakage and contamination. A problem in one component can change the working conditions of the others.
The transparent example shows a 20/40-tooth spiral bevel pair on intersecting 90° axes. Both pitch cones share an apex. The input turns twice for one output revolution. Drag to rotate the view, pause or reverse the mechanism, and switch the housing or labels on and off.
Explore 90° Power flow through intersecting shafts
20 input teeth drive 40 output teeth. Intersecting shafts, angle 90°, The common apex is at the shaft intersection. The transparent housing reveals spiral bevel gears, bearings and seals.
3D kinematic illustration: angles and speed ratio follow tooth counts. Spiral flanks are visual approximations, without tool generation, contact or collision analysis. Each overhung bevel gear has paired shaft supports; preload, tolerance stacks and load capacity are not designed. Transparency is educational.
Main components and transmission layout
Follow the input shaft past its seal and paired supports to the bevel pinion. The mating gear transfers the motion to the perpendicular output shaft. Each gear is outside its two support positions: an overhung arrangement. Its bending behaviour depends on both the overhang and the support spacing.
The model is a teaching illustration. Its approximate spiral tooth surfaces are not generated manufacturing geometry, and it has not undergone tooth-contact or collision analysis. The transparent housing does not represent a finished structural design, and the bearing arrangement is not a completed preload or capacity calculation.
Bearings control position as well as rotation
Select bearings for radial and axial forces, stiffness, speed, fits and thermal conditions. Position the supports with the gear load path in mind. A shaft can remain below its strength limit yet deflect enough to cause edge contact at the teeth.
Preload can improve positional control, but excessive preload raises friction and temperature. Thermal expansion may require a locating/non-locating arrangement or another deliberately controlled solution. Paired angular-contact or tapered-roller bearings require application-specific adjustment.
Shims, spacers and shafts form a dimensional chain
Adjustment shims fine-tune location or the bearing setting. Spacers maintain separation and can carry clamp load. A thrust washer in sliding service additionally requires checks of contact pressure, material, lubrication and heat. These parts are not interchangeable merely because their thickness is similar.
The tolerances of shoulders, housings, bearings, spacers and gears accumulate. Determine shim thickness from this dimensional chain and measurement. Check shaft bending, fatigue, fillets and keyways; then verify mounting distance, backlash and the actual contact pattern after assembly.
Seals and lubrication must work together
A radial shaft seal retains lubricant and excludes contamination; it does not support the shaft. Check lip material, shaft finish, speed, temperature and internal pressure. Protect the lip from sharp edges and keyways during assembly.
For grease lubrication, quantity alone does not prove that the mesh remains supplied. Grease is semi-solid and replenishes the contact differently from liquid oil. The cited worm-gear studies examine distribution and replenishment; their findings do not directly specify the grease fill for every bevel gearbox. Too much lubricant can also increase churning losses and heat.
Verify the assembled transmission
An assembly instruction should state locating datums, shim selection, tightening requirements and the backlash or preload inspection procedure. Record contact patterns, runout and settings, then check leakage, temperature, noise and vibration at idle and under representative load.
Include reversal, emergency stops and peak conditions when they belong to the intended duty. Only system-level checks can establish whether the gears, supports, shafts and seals work together under the same operating conditions.
