Describe the duty before choosing a safety factor
Specify continuous torque, short-duration peaks, starting, reversing and shock loads together with their duration. A drive running at 30 N·m and 300 rpm, briefly reaching 60 N·m and reversing every ten seconds, cannot be represented adequately by a single average torque.
At 300 rpm, 10,000 operating hours correspond to 180 million shaft revolutions. Converting these into tooth load cycles requires the actual meshing arrangement, working-time fraction and loaded flank. A load spectrum records both the magnitude and frequency of the operating conditions.
Hardness is one material property, not a strength rating
Hardness measures resistance to local indentation. Strength describes resistance to specified failure mechanisms; toughness concerns energy absorption before fracture. A high surface hardness cannot compensate for an unsuitable core, inadequate hardening depth, inclusions, grinding damage or poor tooth geometry.
Root bending fatigue and flank pitting require different checks. Micro-pitting, scuffing, wear and overload fracture have additional causes. Material data must match the steel grade, heat-treatment route and quality level used in the selected rating method. Do not derive a permissible gear torque from a hardness conversion alone.
Choose the heat treatment for the duty
Quenching and tempering develop bulk properties and a balance of core strength and toughness. Induction hardening locally hardens selected regions; the hardened pattern and root coverage matter. Carburising followed by hardening creates a hard case over a tougher core; effective case depth and finishing distortion require control.
Nitriding can provide a hard surface with comparatively limited distortion, but case depth, compound-layer condition and material compatibility remain important. Surface hardness, core hardness and effective case depth are separate drawing requirements. Measurement position and test force must suit the layer being assessed.
Use hardness conversions within the source table
The converter provides HV, HBW and Rockwell scales; the extended steel table also includes HRD, superficial Rockwell HR15N/HR30N/HR45N and metallic Shore HS. HS is not the Shore A or D scale used for polymers. HK and Leeb HL are not supported by these datasets.
Conversions are approximate and depend on material and test method. Each source table is used independently, without extrapolation or combining incompatible ranges. Interpolation does not create measurement accuracy. Thin cases, coatings, non-ferrous alloys and plastics require suitable tests or dedicated conversion data. ISO 18265 and SAE J417 describe the limits of such comparisons; contractual acceptance should use the specified test scale.
Hardness conversion: select a table and input scale
HRC、HV、HBW are different hardness scales, not units that can be directly multiplied or divided. Published tables are interpolated; ≈ denotes an estimate, not a new measurement.
Conversion interval and source data
These are the published reference points used. Blanks and non-standard parenthesized values are excluded. Missing scales are not merged across tables, and no extrapolation is made. Tables may differ; retain the table name.
For reference comparison of non-austenitic steels. Carburized or nitrided cases, thin hardened layers and other materials are outside this conversion; measure directly using the specified scale.HV0.3、HV1、HV10 numbers specify test-force conditions, not freely interchangeable hardness scales.
MPa/N/mm² are strength or stress units, not hardness scales. Hardness is not converted to allowable gear stress, rated torque or safety factors.
A mating pair carries equal and opposite contact forces
For the ideal external cylindrical pair, i = z₂/z₁, n₂ = n₁/i and T₂ = iT₁. Tangential force is Fₜ = 2000T₁/d_w1 = 2000T₂/d_w2 when torque is in N·m and diameter in mm. The driven gear's larger torque does not mean its contact force is larger.
Resolve the force using the operating transverse pressure angle α_wt and operating helix angle β_w: Fᵣ = Fₜ tan α_wt and |Fₐ| = Fₜ tan |β_w|. In a common coordinate frame the paired forces are opposite. Axial direction depends on hand, rotation and the loaded flank. These equations do not determine bearing reactions without shaft geometry and support locations.
The tool assumes ideal power transfer and omits friction, impact, dynamic factors and losses. It is a force calculation, not a full ISO or AGMA strength assessment. Bevel and hypoid gears require their own geometry and force conventions.
Inspect forces on both gears
Enter driving torque, working pitch diameter and tooth counts. The ratio determines the driven diameter and speed; both shaft torques and all three contact-force components are listed.
Formulas, intermediate values and assumptions
For compatible external spur or helical gears on parallel shafts. Helical gears require equal helix-angle magnitudes and opposite hands. Ideal, lossless, frictionless steady single mesh; other meshes, bearing reactions, gravity, inertia and additional thrust are excluded.
Contact forces are equal and opposite. A larger working pitch radius gives a longer lever arm and greater torque. Values are magnitudes; determine signs in one coordinate system. Axial thrust also depends on helix hand and rotation.
No strength safety factors are calculated. Despite equal contact forces, each gear requires separate assessment of root geometry, material, heat treatment and fatigue cycles.
Assembly errors can dominate service life
Misaligned bearing bores, shaft bending and housing distortion can concentrate load at one face edge. Incorrect bevel-gear mounting distance can move the contact pattern; backlash alone is insufficient to confirm correct positioning. Too little backlash may cause hot running, while excessive clearance can aggravate reversal impacts.
Excessive bearing preload increases heat and friction; insufficient preload can reduce positional control. Damaged seal lips, contamination and inadequate lubricant supply introduce further failure paths. Inspect shaft runout, bearing fits, shoulders, shims, mounting distances, backlash and the contact pattern in a defined sequence.
Record the pattern, temperature, noise and vibration before and after adjustment, then verify under representative load. A gear that turns freely by hand is not proof of correct loaded contact. The 2025 Gear Technology system-analysis article also highlights coupling between mesh forces, bearing stiffness and system deflection.
Select standards by the question being assessed
ISO 6336, ANSI/AGMA 2101 and DIN 3990 address cylindrical-gear rating within their respective scopes. ISO 10300 and ANSI/AGMA 2003 address bevel-gear applications. Material-quality information, including DIN 3990-5 and JIS B 1755, must be consistent with the chosen rating method.
DIN ISO 1328-1 and JIS B 1702-1 concern flank accuracy, not a guaranteed torque or life. ANSI/AGMA 2008 and JIS B 1705 address different assembly or backlash topics. JIS B 1759 concerns plastic gears and must not be treated as a steel rating method. Confirm the edition, scope and compatible factors; an older publication date does not by itself mean a standard is withdrawn.
The bibliography distinguishes public catalogue information, technical articles and research. Paid standards have not been reproduced. Use their authorised full texts and application-specific validation for final design.
