Start with the installation constraints

Define shaft positions, input speed, required output speed, continuous and peak torque, operating hours and reversal behaviour. Add the available envelope, mounting interfaces, permissible backlash, temperature, lubricant and environmental conditions. These requirements should be agreed before a gear type is selected.

A ratio describes speed conversion; it does not establish available output power or life. For an assumed efficiency η, P_out = ηP_in and |T_out| = η|i|T_in. Actual efficiency varies with speed, load, lubrication, temperature and the supporting components.

Configuration screening

Start with shaft arrangement, then check requirements

Geometric candidates only; torque, life, noise, efficiency and cost are not assessed.

Match the gear family to the shaft axes

Parallel shafts commonly use spur or helical gears. Spur gears avoid the axial thrust generated by an ideal helical mesh; helical gearing offers progressive engagement but needs axial support. For intersecting axes, bevel gears provide a change in direction, often at 90°. Spiral bevel gears are still sensitive to mounting accuracy and loaded contact.

Hypoid gears have offset, non-intersecting axes and additional sliding, requiring suitable lubrication. Worm gearing also accommodates non-intersecting shafts and can provide substantial reduction, but must not automatically be assumed self-locking. A rack converts rotation into linear motion. A planetary arrangement can provide coaxial input and output in a compact radial layout.

Evaluate the whole transmission

A quieter tooth form cannot overcome a flexible housing or poor alignment. A wider gear does not guarantee uniform load distribution. Adding planets does not justify multiplying the single-path torque rating by their number. Bearing stiffness, manufacturing errors and carrier behaviour influence load sharing.

Compare the complete installation: axial length, outside diameter, support span, seals, lubrication provisions, access for assembly and total manufacturing cost. For duty involving holding a load, define a separate verified brake or holding requirement instead of relying on a gear-family label.

The fixed member determines the ratio

Sun gear S、Planet gear P、Ring gear R、Planet carrier C. Identify the fixed member, input and output. Planets orbit and spin simultaneously.

Animation is slowed while preserving speed ratios. Lines show pitch circles and rotation marks; ring teeth are schematic. All speeds use the same viewing direction, so signs are comparable.

Speeds, dimensions and assembly checks
“A valid ratio does not guarantee assembly

zᵣ = zₛ + 2zₚ, then checks equal-spacing assembly and clearance between adjacent planet tips. Failure stops animation. Passing does not verify internal interference, tooth roots, ring thickness, planet pins or load sharing.

Three preliminary assembly checks: see S20. Zero profile shift and equal module 20° spur gears. Output torque uses assumed efficiency and is not a single planet’s capacity. Simplified ring teeth are not manufacturing geometry.

Prepare a useful request for quotation

Provide drawings or models, shaft relationships and the available envelope; input speed and target ratio; rated, peak and stall torque; starts and reversals; daily duty and desired service life; backlash, noise and thermal limits; and environmental and lubrication conditions.

Also identify material and heat-treatment requirements, inspection criteria, prototype quantity and expected annual volume. Clearly mark whether dimensions are fixed interfaces or provisional design values. This allows manufacturability and the transmission arrangement to be discussed together.
